How to Start Your Child’s Musical Journey

Why Start with Music Appreciation?

Music appreciation is more than just listening - it’s about engaging with music as a language. When children are exposed to a wide variety of music in an intentional, guided way, their curiosity is sparked.

They begin to notice patterns, rhythms, and melodies, and often want to know more about how music “works.” This curiosity forms the ideal foundation for learning the building blocks of music, such as note reading and musical terminology.

The SQUILT Progression: A Pathway for Musical Growth

Here’s a typical progression many of our SQUILT families experience in SQUILT LIVE!

1. Start with Music Appreciation  with SQUILT LIVE!

Our SQUILT LIVE! sessions are designed to help children truly listen and respond to music. Through guided listening, discussion, and fun activities, children begin to understand music as a language and art form.

2. Introduce Basic Concepts

As children become more comfortable listening and responding to music, we weave in foundational concepts like reading basic notes and rhythms. These elements are introduced in a gentle, engaging way to enhance both understanding and enjoyment.

3. Pursue Further Instruction

Once a strong foundation is in place, many families choose to complement their appreciation experience with structured lessons-such as piano, voice, or music theory classes. This next step feels natural because children are already excited about music and eager to learn more.

4. OR... Explore SQUILT'S Do-It-Yourself Volumes

If you’re looking for a flexible, open-and-go way to bring music appreciation into your home or classroom and do not want the LIVE! lesson membership,  the SQUILT do-it-yourself (DIY) volumes are a fantastic option.

Designed for families who want the freedom to set their own pace, these volumes make it easy to introduce children to great music- no prior musical experience is required.

Each SQUILT volume focuses on a specific era of music (such as the Baroque, Classical, or Romantic periods) and includes a curated selection of lessons. Every lesson provides:

• Background information about the composer and piece
• Links to listen to the music online (no CDs or special equipment needed)
• Printable SQUILT record sheets for both younger and older children- kids can write or draw their responses to the music
• Guidance on musical elements like rhythm, dynamics, tempo, and instrumentation
• Suggestions for further exploration and related activities

The DIY volumes are highly adaptable: you can use as much or as little of the material as you like, making them ideal for busy families or those new to music education. Whether you want to spend just 10 minutes a week or dive deeper into each piece, SQUILT’s DIY volumes give you the tools to build meaningful music appreciation experiences at home.

With SQUILT, you’re not just adding music to your curriculum-you’re building a lifelong love and understanding of music, one masterpiece at a time.

A Flexible, Well-Rounded Approach

It’s common for students to participate in both SQUILT and private instrument lessons simultaneously. This tandem approach offers a well-rounded musical education, allowing children to deepen their appreciation while developing technical skills, without overwhelming them.

Many springs in SQUILT LIVE!  we've had a piano recital for our members! Students submit videos of themselves playing a piece of music, which are stitched together to create a virtual recital. It's tons of fun!

Something for Every Age and Stage

At SQUILT, we cater to children from preschool through high school, ensuring there’s something for everyone at every stage of their musical journey. Whether your child is just beginning to explore music or is ready for more advanced study, our program grows with them.
