Great Pieces of Music Every Child Should Know: A Homeschool Guide to Music Appreciation

If you could choose just a handful of pieces of music for your children to know before they grow up, which would you choose?

It’s an interesting question, isn’t it?

There are thousands of beautiful works that have been written throughout history. We could spend a lifetime exploring them all—and I hope we do! But there are also certain pieces that have stood the test of time. They’ve inspired generations of musicians, appeared in movies and television, been performed in concert halls around the world, and become part of our shared cultural heritage.

These are the pieces I believe every child should know.

Not because they’ll ever be tested on them.

Not because every child needs to become a musician.

But because a well-rounded education includes beauty. It includes the opportunity to experience great art, great literature, and yes—great music.

Great Pieces of Music Everyone Should Know

Why Music Appreciation Matters

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the ability to listen.

Really listen.

When children spend time with great music, they begin to notice things they may have never heard before. They recognize instruments. They hear patterns and melodies. They discover how composers use music to tell stories, paint pictures, and express emotions without saying a single word.

Music appreciation isn’t about memorizing facts or composer dates (although those are certainly fun to learn!).

It’s about developing attentive ears, curious minds, and hearts that recognize beauty when they encounter it.

At SQUILT, we call this Super Quiet UnInterrupted Listening Time—or simply, SQUILT.

Sometimes the most meaningful learning happens when we simply press play… and listen.

Our August 2026 Theme: Great Pieces of Music You Need to Know

As we begin another exciting year of SQUILT LIVE!, our August theme is Great Pieces of Music You Need to Know.

Throughout the month, we’ll explore some of the greatest masterpieces ever written, traveling through four major musical eras:

  • 🎼 Baroque – music filled with energy, elegance, and intricate musical conversations
  • 🎻 Classical – balanced, graceful works that introduced many of the forms we still hear today
  • ❤️ Romantic – expressive, emotional music that tells unforgettable stories
  • Modern – bold, imaginative music that expanded the orchestra in exciting new ways

My hope is that by the end of the month, your family will have a wonderful collection of musical “friends” you’ll return to again and again.

These are the pieces that children will recognize throughout their lives—whether they hear them in a concert hall, a movie soundtrack, a television commercial, or someday introduce them to their own children.

Our First Stop: Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3

Every great musical journey needs a place to begin, and one of my favorite starting points is Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, movement 1.

Written over 300 years ago, this joyful concerto is bursting with energy. Bach gives each group of string instruments an opportunity to shine, weaving their musical ideas together like an exciting conversation. We call this counterpoint.

As your children listen, encourage them to notice how the music seems to move from one group of instruments to another. Even without words, Bach creates excitement, momentum, and incredible beauty.

To help your family get started, I’ve created a brand-new SQUILT Musical Moment introducing this remarkable piece.

You may be surprised by the observations your children make when they’re simply given the opportunity to listen carefully.

More Than a Music Class

One of the questions I hear most often is,

“Do I need any musical background to teach music appreciation?”

The answer is a wholehearted no.

SQUILT was created for homeschool parents just like you. You don’t need to read music, play an instrument, or have any formal musical training. All you need is a willingness to explore alongside your children.

Music appreciation becomes one of those wonderful homeschool subjects that the entire family enjoys together.

And This Is Just the Beginning…

Beginning with these “must-know” masterpieces is the perfect way to launch an exciting year of musical discovery.

After August, our journey continues through an incredible lineup of themes in SQUILT LIVE!:
